Georgetown, the 'Garden City', is the capital and largest city of Guyana, located on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River. It is characterised by tree-lined avenues and wooden architecture from the Dutch and British colonial periods. It lies below sea level and is protected by a system of sea walls, canals, and kokers.

It is the seat of government. Georgetown was initially established as 'Stabroek' by the Dutch. As the capital of British Guiana it was renamed in honour of King George III in 1812. It gained oficial city status in 1842.

Points of interest include the Wai-Wai Umana Yana (1972), the Georgetown Lighthouse, the neo-Gothic City Hall (1889), the Parliament Buildings (1829-1834), Stabroek Market (1792), the Botanical Gardens and Zoological Park, Promenade Gardens, Castellani House (Art Gallery), the Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology, the National Library (built by Andrew Carnegie), the Bank of Guyana, the National Museum, State House (1852) where the President resides, St. Andrew's Kirk (1818 Guyana's oldest church), Brickdam Cathedral and St. George's Cathedral. There are many churches, mosques and mandirs in Georgetown.

Georgetown is home to the University of Guyana, the Cyril Potter Teacher Training College and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat.
